Art in World Cultures
Mrs. Rhea: [email protected]
Course Value
Students explore art from around the world through project-based activities. Based on directed investigation, students reinterpret selected forms to promote understanding of themes, purposes, symbolism, and traditional formal characteristics. Students compare various cultural responses in art to universal themes, gaining respect for diverse perspectives and the rich heritage shared by cultures from around the world. Supporting geographic, cultural and societal studies, and historical context help students refine their understandings of time and place in global cultures. Students consider the value of preserving these works in today's museums and other public buildings, private collections, and in digital format for sharing and study via the Internet. This course incorporates hands-on activities and consumption of art materials

These expectations are in addition to the ECMS code of conduct requirements. Also, please check your child’s planner daily. Your child will be required to have a planner with them every day in every class.
Grading
All assignments count for a total of 100 points each. If a student has an excused absence they will be given 3 days to complete missed work. I have attached the universal rubric which will be used for most lessons. Students will need an 8 ½ x 11 spiral notebook, 100 sheets (college rule, any color) to use as their Interactive Art Journal. This will be kept in the classroom, used daily, and graded every 9 weeks.
Tests or quizzes will be given to assess knowledge of terms, techniques, and styles. These evaluations will also involve writing about art, encouraging content development, and correct use of grammar and punctuation.
Parents, if you look at your child’s grades on Focus, please keep in mind that the grade book is a living document, which is subject to change as students submit and modify work. It is possible that the grades you see will change and may not be an exact indicator of your child’s current grade. Please allow ample time for grades to be entered and adjusted. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Movies and Video Clips:
Occasionally, we will watch movies, TED talks, or documentaries addressing graphic design principles, book illustrations, artistic styles, or artist biographies. If you would prefer your child not watch these, an alternative assignment and setting will be provided. Please sign below to give your child permission to watch PG or PG-13 videos and movies during the 2015 -2016 school year.
